Chowder I understand as I am on the road for my job a lot and some hotels have terrible internet connections!
First, let me thank you for this wealth of knowledge. This is an interesting real-time example of a DGI portfolio. I appreciate your hard work in maintaining this. I also am grateful for your continued knowledge sharing over at Seeking Alpha.I apologize if this question is already answered in another post within the blog, but I searched and could not find the results (perhaps I didn't look hard enough). Is there a running tally on what the expenses have been to acquire these positions? For instance do we know the monthly/yearly dollar value of what the costs have been in broker fees, etc.?I think this would be an interesting addition to track with this blog, as it would give some insight into how the expenses of trading into and out of positions are trending year over year. I would guess we would see an increase in dollars spent to maintain this portfolio as it grows in size. I understand, or at least believe I understand, that a core principle within this strategy is we won't be seeing a huge amount of selling out of stock positions. I still think it would be interesting to track! :)Thanks again for this all of your hard work.
Ryan, I suppose some people may want to track "trading costs" but I'm not trading. I'm investing for the long term here.I decided I wasn't going to worry about the small stuff and instead focus on the big picture. So far this year there have been 7 buy positions and 1 sell position. That's less than $80 in trading costs on a $105 K portfolio. That comes out to 0.07%, not enough to worry about. The first dividend payment from each company offsets the trading fees.If the amount of leakage I get is only 0.07%, I'll take it and move on. My leakage when trading was certainly much higher.Good question though.
I just discovered your blog after reading about the "chowder rule" on seeking alpha. This is right up my alley I have to say and I'll be tracking your progress along the way. Best of luck!
Thanks for the kind words.I've been on vacation the past week or so and I am not up to date yet on what I missed while I was gone. As soon as I catch up, I'll post the July results. It should be a day or two at most.
